Federal District Court

A.  What branch of government does the District Court Represent?

  • Judicial

B.  What is the difference between a civil and criminal case? (give specific examples)

  • Criminal is against someone, like murder or assault

  • Civil is something that isn’t violent and doesn’t hurt someone, like tax fraud

 

 

C.  What is the difference in cases between municipal, state, and federal courts. (give an example of a case that would be tried at municipal court, state court, and federal court.

  • Municipal- Housing violations, traffic violations, civil issues. (Running a stop sign)

  • State- Criminal crimes and crimes that are involving medium amounts of money. (Assault)

  • Federal- Federal courts deal with things that deal with large amounts of money, things involving the constitution, and things involving bankruptcy, patients, and copyrights. (Arguing whether you owe $1,000,000 or not)

 

D.  What is the difference between original and appellate jurisdiction?

  • Original court is just a normal court that you would think of, but then the appellate court is when you think there was a mistake in the original court and want to see if they agree with the mistake.
